AISI 4130 is a widely used chromium-molybdenum medium-alloy structural steel under SAE J403 standard, famous for excellent strength, outstanding toughness and reliable hardenability. The compound addition of Cr and Mo effectively prevents temper brittleness, allowing thick workpieces to obtain consistent mechanical properties after quenching and tempering. Compared with 4140, 4130 has lower carbon content, better cold formability and welding performance, while its strength is slightly lower, making it ideal for structural parts requiring both impact resistance and light weight. It can be supplied as hot rolled black skin round bars, precision ground bright bars, seamless tubes and forged blanks.
Table 1: Chemical Composition of AISI 4130 (Mass Fraction, wt.%)
| Element | Content Range | Metallurgical Function |
|---|
| C | 0.28–0.33% | Provides basic strength without sacrificing ductility |
| Si | 0.15–0.35% | Deoxidation, improve elastic limit |
| Mn | 0.40–0.60% | Grain refinement, enhance hardenability |
| Cr | 0.80–1.10% | Boost wear resistance and deep hardening capacity |
| Mo | 0.15–0.25% | Eliminate temper brittleness, stabilize high-temperature toughness |
| P | ≤0.040% | Impurity limit to avoid cold brittleness |
| S | ≤0.040% | Control hot cracking risk during hot forging |

After quenching at 860–890℃ and high-temperature tempering at 480–620℃, 4130 steel can reach tensile strength of 830–980 MPa with great low-temperature impact toughness. It supports welding, bending and cold forging after full annealing, and surface nitriding can further upgrade surface hardness and wear resistance. It has uniform internal structure and low internal stress after heat treatment, so deformation risk is minimal for complex structural components.
Its application involves multiple key industries. In aerospace and aviation, it is used for aircraft landing gear components, engine support frames and high-strength structural tubes, which bear severe alternating impact loads. In automobile manufacturing, it produces high-strength control arms, chassis connecting shafts, motorcycle frames and heavy-duty wheel hubs. In petroleum machinery, seamless 4130 tubes serve as drill pipes, wellhead fittings and hydraulic pressure pipelines adapting to underground complex working conditions. Besides, it is widely adopted for construction machinery pin shafts, high-pressure cylinder barrels, racing vehicle frames and medium-load gear parts that demand lightweight and shock resistance.
Thanks to balanced comprehensive performance, good processing adaptability and globally unified equivalent grades, AISI 4130 is an irreplaceable alloy steel for high-toughness lightweight structural components across aviation, automobile and energy equipment sectors.
