2205 (UNS S32205, 1.4462) is the most widely used 22% chromium duplex stainless steel, consisting of balanced austenite and ferrite dual-phase microstructure. It combines high strength of ferritic stainless steel and excellent corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel, featuring outstanding resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion. It outperforms 304 / 316L in mechanical strength and anti-chloride erosion capacity, and serves as a cost-saving alternative to super austenitic stainless steel for marine, chemical and petroleum equipment. Available forms include wire rod, round bar, plate, seamless tube, forged billet and sheet.
Chemical Composition of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel (wt.%)
| Element | Content Range | Metallurgical Function |
|---|
| C | ≤0.030% | Ultra-low carbon eliminates intergranular carbide precipitation, prevents intergranular corrosion |
| Si | ≤1.00% | Deoxidation, improve high-temperature oxidation resistance |
| Mn | ≤2.00% | Stabilize austenite phase, adjust dual-phase ratio |
| Cr | 21.50–23.50% | Main anti-corrosion element, form passive chromium oxide film against pitting |
| Ni | 4.50–6.50% | Balance ferrite-austenite dual-phase structure, boost toughness |
| Mo | 2.50–3.50% | Critical for resisting chloride pitting & crevice corrosion in saltwater medium |
| N | 0.08–0.20% | Enhance strength without sacrificing ductility, further improve pitting resistance |
| P | ≤0.030% | Control cold brittleness |
| S | ≤0.020% | Minimize sulfide inclusions to avoid corrosion origin points |

1.Core Performance Characteristics
- Dual-phase structure ratio: Approx. 50% ferrite + 50% austenite after solution annealing at 1020–1100℃ water quenching; tensile strength nearly double that of 304 stainless steel, excellent yield strength.
- Corrosion resistance: Excellent tolerance to seawater, brine, dilute acid, chloride-containing wastewater; effectively avoids stress corrosion cracking which easily occurs in 304 and 316L under chloride environment.
- Mechanical & processing property: Good forgeability, machinability and weldability; welding requires strict temperature control to prevent phase imbalance and performance degradation.
- Limitation: Not suitable for long-term service above 300℃; embrittlement risk at high temperature, cannot be used for high-temperature heating equipment.
2.Main Application Fields
- Marine & desalination industry: Seawater pipeline, desalination heat exchanger tube, offshore platform fluid pipeline, seawater pump body and valve parts.
- Chemical & petrochemical equipment: Reactor vessel, acid storage tank, chloride medium heat exchanger, oilfield downhole pipeline and separation equipment.
- Environmental protection & water treatment: Municipal wastewater equipment, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) absorption tower, chemical sewage pipeline.
- Food & paper industry: Pulp digester, food processing corrosion-resistant equipment, brine processing mechanical components.
- Construction & pressure vessel: High-strength corrosion-resistant pressure vessels, coastal building structural parts, chemical transportation tank accessories.
Compared with 316L, 2205 duplex stainless steel achieves higher strength and superior chloride corrosion resistance with lower nickel content, balancing performance and comprehensive cost. It is the mainstream duplex grade for medium-severity corrosive working conditions worldwide.
3. Other Common Duplex Grades
- Lean Duplex 2304 (S32304, 1.4362): No molybdenum, for fresh water, food equipment, low-salt environments.
- Super Duplex 2507 (S32750, 1.4410): Higher Cr/Mo, PREN≈42, for seawater, subsea & sour oilfield service.
- Lean Duplex 2101 (S32101): Ultra-low nickel, low-cost structural material for mild corrosion.
4. Main Applications of 2205
- Oil & gas: Chloride process piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers
- Water treatment & desalination: Seawater pipelines, pumps & valves
- Marine & offshore: Offshore wind accessories, ship ballast tanks
- Pulp, paper & food processing: Bleaching equipment, storage tanks
